About

ABOUT ME

ABOUT ME

Therapy is an excavation. It is a cathartic oxygenation of buried emotions done by the client and the therapist. It is my goal as a therapist to create a safe place for you to be willing to go through pain, trusting that healing is on the other side. My therapy style is warm, humorous, and nurturing, which helps my clients feel the safety and comfort necessary to look within themselves and then make actual positive and potentially transformative changes in their lives through reflection and the conversional power of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).

Any course of therapy should start with an intention—what emotional issue brings you to therapy? Without this focus, therapy can turn into weekly check-ins where change rarely occurs. My objective is for individual therapy to be time-limited. Neither the patient nor the therapist should want therapy to last forever. Ultimately, my job as your therapist is to make myself obsolete. Therapy can, and should, focus on goals and outcomes, and people should be able to graduate from it. Many patients need an aggressive therapist who prods them to face what they find uncomfortable: change.

Emotions themselves do not inhibit the therapeutic process, rather people's inability to manage emotions and use them well is the problem. My style can be described as emotion-focused, helping people become aware of and express their emotions, learn to tolerate and regulate them, and potentially transform them through reflection. Learning about emotions is not enough; instead, what is needed is for clients to experience, feel, and express those emotions as they arise in the safety of the therapy session where they can discover for themselves the value of greater awareness and more flexible emotional management. Emotion-focused therapy systematically, but flexibly, helps clients become aware of and make productive use of their emotions, using their symptoms of anxiety as an indication that feelings are being ignored or repressed.

It is important to treat the whole person in order to find true healing. The mind, body, and heart are connected, and I use creative, holistic approaches to help my clients activate all of their natural resources to find strength and heal themselves mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

I believe in the work I do. I believe change is possible because I have seen it, and I have lived it. There is nothing more exciting for me than to witness another’s curative process. Congratulations on taking this step towards joy and serenity, towards a more conscious, self-assured way of living.

EXPERIENCE

When I consider my work experience thus far, I think about what I have learned and how I have grown in each role.  18 years ago during my first position in the field, out of undergrad, I was working with the elderly; it allowed me to learn the arts of patience, compassion, and advocacy. I was taught how to develop a program, gather appropriate data for grant writing, and ultimately, how to manage a team.

My adult caseload within the community mental health setting helped me to better understand the personal challenges which had created barriers in their lives. Through this experience, I feel confident employing a multidisciplinary approach in working with individuals exhibiting a wide range of diagnostic conditions, crisis management, and engagement with those most resistant to treatment.

My internship, and later my role in a grant-funded connection project, aided me to feel comfortable working with an inpatient population.  Connecting with individuals at their most vulnerable proved to be challenging, but also one of my most rewarding jobs.  This instilled in me the importance of a thorough safety assessment, and a time-limited need to connect.

As an EAP counselor, I honed in on my crisis management skills, having the ability to remain calm in an emergency and offer in-the-moment supports.  This role allowed me to work under two umbrellas simultaneously—the client, and their employer.

Being a group fitness instructor took me out of my comfort zone, increasing my ease in public speaking and flexing an extrovert muscle that is typically weak for me.

My recent efforts with college-age students have reminded me just how difficult the transition between high school and the world, between youth and adulthood, can be. Navigating those decisions, molding a new identity, and learning about responsibility: these challenges require empathy and encouragement.

Fees and Payments

Insurance:

I do not accept insurance for a number of reasons. One reason is that the process of managed care submissions and reimbursement is complicated and lengthy. I also am not always comfortable with the exchange of private information required by insurers. This information can become part of your permanent medical records and can be used when you are applying for disability or life insurance.

Without having to deal with insurance companies, I have much more time to devote to my clients outside of sessions as needed to be more responsive and to provide more individualized treatment.

I can provide receipts for anyone wishing to seek reimbursement as I am a qualified out-of-network provider.

Fees:

Regular therapy sessions are 50 minutes. Session fees are $135.  Note: some clients pay less due to financial considerations (sliding scale).

Longer sessions are available if needed and appropriate, and we can determine fees based on length of the session.

I accept cash or check, or credit card via Square App.

I have a 24 hour cancellation policy except in cases of emergency. The first 2 late cancellations will be a $50 charge. Thereafter and no-shows are full fee charge.
